Stainless steel appliances may become a thing of the past thanks to retro-engineering. A retro fridge now can look like it came straight out of the 50’s. Manufacturers like Big Chill, Smeg Refrigeration, Gorenje, Northstar, and LaGlaciere are combining retro looks with modern features. Though these appliances have a vintage look, their price tag is very 21st century.
The Big Chill and Smeg refrigerators have round, chunky bodies and doors. Door handles and trim are chrome. Models have one or two doors and come in a rainbow of glossy colors. The top door can be ordered in a contrasting color. Don’t let their outward appearance fool you. These appliances have a low energy consumption and high efficiency rating. 14.4 and 20.9 cu.ft. are the standard sizes available. $2495.00 and $2695.00 are their respective starting price tags.
The Northstar models are similar in design to the Big Chill and Smeg refrigerators. However, the size range starts smaller at 9.9cu.ft and with a price tag of $1999.00.
Gorenje offers its own version of retro-engineering, a retro fridge designed with a rounded appearance but with a slender stature. Color options are as varied but can come in colored metallic finishes as well. One or two door models are available. LED screens provide temperature control. Gorenje refrigerators are manufactured in Europe.
LaGlaciere has their own version of retro-engineering, a retro fridge with an even older design, that of a wooden ice box. Crafted in French Oak with glass windows, leather door seals, and solid brass handles, fittings and temperature controls; it is quite an elegant piece. This beauty is priced at 7,951.75 pounds or $13,000 U.S.
Retro refrigerators are common in Europe. The prices there are comparable to our standard refrigerators at around $600.00. Big name U.S. manufacturers such as Amana, Kenmore, and Coldspot make similar versions that have a rounded appearance, but lack the traditional chrome trim. These refrigerators are comparably priced to other American counterparts.
Pastense in California as well as other dealers across the country are now selling these retro designed appliances. Dealers can be found on the Internet. Retro refrigerators, stoves and dishwashers can all be ordered in matching colors.
These novelties are for the person longing for that by-gone era. Retro appliances are manufactured with the look of the good old days, but with all the modern technology the present has to offer. We are walking into the future by way of the past.
